Final old recap before I finally post my series finale write up...

“Across The Sea”

I can’t do this episode the justice that this person gave it…

http://darkufo.blogspot.com/2010/05/things-i-noticed-across-sea-by-vozzek69.html

Please read that!

Hear are a few bullet points on what I think was the most talked about and divided opinions of an episode ever…

“Mother” had been lonely and looking for a sign from the island for a replacement. It was found with Jacob. The second baby was not expected. This changed everything. She took this as a sign that one would replace her, while the other would kill her. She manipulates everything so this happens. Notice that baby Jacob was calm, the other baby was restless.

The dagger and Claudia’s dress, (Jacob/MIB’s real mother) indicate that she and the people on the island are Romans. Most likely the island at this time was somewhere in the Mediterranean. According to script pages when Jacob and his brother are older it is suppose to be around 23 A.D. 23 happens to also be the number assigned to Jack, interesting. Which means she probably arrived around 15 B.C. Since Jacob’s brother said he had lived with the people for about 30 years.

I don’t believe Mother left the Egyptian board game: Senet, for her son. She just wanted to get the thought of him leaving the island out of his head. So she pretended to have left it. We already know that like him she is capable of telling a lie.

Jacob’s Brother had some similarities to Locke: Crazy mothers that told him he was “Special”, the MIB was also told of something he could not do: Leave the island. This episode went on to show that many recurring things have been a part of the island since the start: pregnancy issues – not technically an issue but after giving birth to the twins she was murdered! The purges: The Romans, The U.S. Army, and Dharma, etc.

Which brings me to the real mother Claudia appearing to Jacob’s brother…

I believe there are 5 things that happen with the dead on Lost…

1. “Special” people that can tap into the island’s unique properties. Some of these special people can see the dead. (Hurley/Jacob’s brother)

2. Miles ability to communicate with the recently deceased bodies to hear its last thoughts.

3. The whispers: The souls that are trapped and not able to move on due to their actions since coming to the island (Michael)

4. The Man In Black appearing as the island dead via your dreams or disguised as the dead

5. The Island can manifest it’s self as something from your life: Kate when she saw the black horse.

“Mother” was definitely a smoke monster. Too much adds up for this. How else would she get her son up the well, destroy the well, and destroy the village and have time to get to Jacob.

Also, remember underneath the wall that surrounded the temple was a lair for the “monster”; there was an image of the smoke monster next to the Egyptian God Anubis. Which means there was a smoke monster presence on the island prior to Jacob causing his brother to become one. *Although the ancient Egyptians were still around during this time. I got the vibe that they visited the island before Jacob and his brother. Even if they didn’t, I still say mama was a smoke monster.

I don’t think “Mother” killed the people out of pure evil. In fact, I think it was for the greater good. Similar to how Jacob would be OK with purging the Dharma Initiative. The protector needs to keep the light source safe. The Romans digging, the Dharma drilling came to close. Too much was at stake if they got to the light. I also think the MIB could have went back and finished his job with the wheel. Since his Mother made it so he could never leave the island. He would only move the island if he ever attempted to turn it. Not show up randomly in the Tunisia desert like other who turned it.

My take on “Mother” and the source: Mother was the protector of the island prior to Jacob. Perhaps the original protector who had been there since the island existed? Mother admitted she was capable of lies. Her entire story to Claudia about arriving on the island could be pure BS. Over time she got lonely and her curiosity got the best of her. She went inside the source and became a smoke monster.

Mother said the source must be protected from people. There is a little bit of the light inside every person. But people always want more. If the source goes out then the entire world is doomed. Which makes me believe the Island was created first and then the rest of the earth. I believe if a person get’s tempted to go into the source, it rips their very soul and turns their light to dark. This is why mother said it’s worse then death. Not alive, not dead, just a wondering lost soul of dark.

You still are able to be who you were before. Mother was the protector prior to going in the source. When she came out she became a physical manifestation of light and dark. Jacob’s brother wanted to leave the island. He was filled with rage when he saw what happened to his well. When he dies by going through the source. His darkened soul still has the same motives as he did alive: to leave the island. Remember the only time he spent with people were the 30 years he lived among the Romans on the island. He agreed with Mother that they were bad people. So it totally makes sense why 2,000 frustrating years later as a wondering dark soul why he has so much hatred for people/life has evolved.

Speaking of evolution: Jacob. He didn’t know how to play the game with his brother at a young age. He wasn’t quite sure he believed his mother when she said people were bad. So over time he created his own game, with his own rules. To prove that people are not bad to the MIB. It’s particularly important to note that Mother told Jacob he had no choice. He had to be the protector and she was wrong by thinking it was his brother's job to fulfill.

She definitely wanted Jacob’s brother to be the protector. Jacob knows this. As for the whole wine/séance. I’m not even going to speculate. There has always been the source/heart of the island there has always been a protector. This is how you pass on your duties to your apprentice. I believe the protector is able to make the rules. This is how the MIB and Jacob could never kill each other. Because I truly believe that “Mother” did really love both of them. She loved them both in different ways she said. I believe she is the embodiment of light and dark. Since both represent a side of this, it explains how she loves them each in different way.

Notice how when “Mother” sends Jacob to get firewood after destroying the village she does not answer Jacob when he says he’ll see her when she gets back. She knows she will die. She has been pulling the strings to make this happen. She just thought Jacob would be the one to kill her, while his brother would be the one to replace her. Because his brother was more like her. She goes inside and doesn’t say a word. She gets stabbed through the heart by the dagger and thanks her son for killing her. Her time had come and she was ready to move on. Notice how she didn’t speak and he stabbed her through the heart. Further proof that she was more then just a human. We keep hearing about how if you don’t let them speak and stab them in the chest they can die.

Jacob’s emotions get the best of him. Hearing his mother told him the source cave was something worse then death he throws his brother down it. The source spits his body out and out comes his darkened lost soul. Jacob would soon realize the mistake he made and create a game in hopes of repairing his mistake.

Thus the reveal of “Adam and Eve”, they really were like the Oceanic survivors very own version of Adam and Eve. They had a very compelling magical back-story that led to 815 being brought to the island. Just replace the Garden of Eden for the island, the apple, for the source, the snake for the smoke monster.

“What They Died For”

Flash sideways story: Mirrors all over the place! Throughout the season it’s been happening in the sideways world. Tonight Ben saw his own reflection. Jack in the beginning of the episode notices a cut. Jack had a random cut on the Oceanic flight as well. He also noticed his scar from his appendix. What’s going on with him? I think this version of Jack is going to die. While the other one on the island lives. More on this in a bit.

We finally got confirmation that Desmond was not trying to kill Locke. But he’s trying to make him let go and to spark the memory of the island timeline. Once Ben experiences the flash he starts to believe Desmond. This information is what allows Locke to become a full on man of faith in this universe. He is now ready for the surgery. Nice shout out to Mr. Eko by Jack when he talks surgery and fate with Locke: “Don’t mistake coincidence for fate.”

Loving the Rousseau Ben meet up. Can someone say odd romance? Great line from Danielle about willing to kidnap Ben to make him go to the dinner.

The concert: Jack’s son is playing a concert. Jack is going. Miles will be at the concert, so will his dad, Charlotte, most likely Hurley since he used his money to help the museum. Desmond is bringing Kate to the concert. Sounds like something big will go down at the concert. Like everyone will get the spark. I think Jack sees Kate and it will happen. Sawyer will see Jack’s ex who is definitely going to be Juliet and it will happen. Hurley seems to have moved much further along in his memories of the island timeline. He almost talks to Ana Lucia as if they are good friends. Desmond informs him she is not ready yet. Could that be because he doesn’t want to show her she got shot in the chest by Mr. “WAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLTTTTTTTTT”? This also explains why Ms. Hawking knew so much when she spoke to Desmond. She had the spark register with her earlier in life. Hurley has only been a few weeks and look at how much he remembers. Imagine where Ms. Hawking is at with island life memories.

Thing I’m most intrigued about with the flash sideways was Desmond telling Jack they found his "lost luggage: aka his dad. Curious to see where that goes. Along with what will happen in the Jack/Locke surgery. I also believe in this universe Kate is innocent.

Island timeline/The Candidates: Loved the moment of Jack sewing up Kate’s shoulder. Reminded me of when they first met and Kate sewed up Jack.

Young Jacob snatching his ashes and then seeing adult Jacob with the ashes in the fire: There is no answer for this. It was cool. I think that’s all it was suppose to be, just a cool weird thing to do. Way too much other stuff going on in this show to even begin to speculate on stuff like this. Why did he throw his ashes in the fire though? For whatever reason Jacob, who is dead, is able to still appear. He has nothing more to do but pick his replacement. Once this is done he will finally move on. It’s like a star wars type myth: The master needs to move on so the apprentice can become the master.

Free will vs. Fate: Jacob wants to give his replacement the choice for the job. Something he never had. I also really liked the explanation for why Kate was no longer a candidate. It was not based on something bad she did. It was almost as if Jacob didn’t want a mother to be a protector of the island because of the way his own ended up being. I also liked how he said it was just a line of chalk through her name and that she could still have the job. Made me have hope for a certain other character whose name was crossed out with a line of chalk.

Like the lighthouse, I believe Sawyer, Jack and Kate could see Jacob because now they were ready to see Jacob. Jacob admits that he made a mistake and has been trying to make up for it ever since: letting his emotions get to him and creating the “monster”. He defends his reasons for bringing them to the island, like him they were flawed and lonely. They needed the island as much as it needed them. AKA they were lost and needed purpose, a way to find themselves. I thought it was interesting that Jacob said they had to do what he couldn’t: kill the MIB. Rather then just say you need to make sure he never leaves the island. Most likely because no one will ever be truly safe as long as the MIB exists.

Jack chooses to become the new protector. Finally becoming a man of faith and knowing he always was brought to the island for a reason. We learn that it wasn’t actually the wine that was magical. But whatever magic blessing or communion is said with the liquid that makes it magical. I think it’s pretty cool that when Jack first landed on the island in the bamboo field, he was very close to the heart of the island in that moment. Knowing that now, makes watching the show over one day cooler. Along with knowing when you see the monster you are seeing the Man in Black, etc. Now as the chosen one, he has the ability to see it. I think Jack being the protector makes total sense. He’s always been in denial and not a believer. Now he is and is ready to accept what that means. I think they still might throw a curveball. As far as story arch’s on this show goes this was the one that I never thought would have a twist or turn. So far it hasn’t.

I also don’t think it matters what Jacob said over the cup of water. All that matter is that Jack BELIEVED it. It’s all about leaps of faith.

Ben/Richard/Miles: Damn this island likes to haunt people! Makes you wonder if Ben and company walked over Alex’s grave because the island knew Ben would soon see Widmore. Loved the comment by Ben that he thought he could summon the monster for protection. In reality he was the one being summoned. The monster protected him for it’s best interest: Ben was it's perfect candidate to kill Jacob.

Widmore and Zoe show up having just fled Hydra Island. I think it’s safe to say the entire Widmore submarine crew is now dead. Turns out the C4 on the Ajira plane was Widmore’s doing. Widmore explains that Jacob visited him after his freighter sank. Urging him to finally return to the island for this exact purpose: To bring Desmond to the island as a fail-safe if the Candidates fail to kill the MIB. Pretty ironic since by turning a fail safe key in the hatch Desmond became able to withstand massive exposure to electromagnetic energy. Widmore is not concerned with his past issues with Ben or Richard. He is concerned for everyone’s safety and pleads with them to hide.

Miles flees into the jungle. Ben decides he is done hiding. Ben gives Miles one of Widmore’s walkie-talkies and keeps one for himself. I think this will be important. Richard believes he can take a diplomatic approach by talking to the MIB: That doesn’t go over so well. I’ll say this right now. No way is Richard dead. I believe he will die. But he is going to get a much more epic death then that. We will see him with his wife before it’s all said and done. I also believe Jacob put some sort of protection over Richard from the MIB like he did the other candidates. Otherwise MIB would have killed him the second Richard refused to join his team earlier this season.

Ben can’t escape his old demons even while on a path for redemption. He can’t look past his history with Charles and his daughter. He needs watch Charles die to move on. BUT BEFORE THAT ZOE DIES!!!!!!!!! The death of that character made her annoying appearances worth it. KNIFE BY EVIL LOCKE THING!!!!!! He also speaks for the audience: He killed her because Widmore told her not to talk. Therefore she was pointless. Amazing. The MIB then exposes Charles’s weakness to find out what he wants to know: I’ll kill your daughter first when I leave. Charles gives in. I don’t know why he didn’t just lie. Ben then shoots him and says, “He doesn’t get to save his daughter.” DAMN! The MIB is pleased with Ben. He is now his hired gun to kill the remaining candidates.

I don’t buy it. I think Ben just really wanted Widmore dead. He’ll go along with the MIB as a means of survival but will still help the others. I wouldn’t be shocked if Ben ends up Jack’s new Richard Alpert. Since the Island is all he really has ever known and he loves it. I think this is why he gave Miles a walkie-talkie. As a way to warn the others somehow.

Ben and MIB get to the well: clearly Jack and company got there first or Sayid let him up, which is probable since MIB complained to Sayid for taking to long to get the job done. MIB is happy Desmond isn’t dead. He’ll use him as a weapon to destroy the island. Something he has wanted to do for a long time. Just like Jack is looking to use Desmond as a weapon to kill the MIB. But wait I thought the MIB promised Ben the island when he left. Damn he tells lies!

So where is everyone at…

MIB/Ben: at the old well

Jack/Kate/Sawyer/Hurley/Desmond: most likely heading to the source/heart of the island

Richard: No way is he dead…yet. Recovering from a bad headache at the barracks.

Miles: Running like hell through the jungle. I still say he somehow gets shot by the time traveling losties on the outrigger.

Claire: Still sitting on the dock at the hydra island?

All of Widmore company is gone. Still not 100% sure if Frank is dead yet. Maybe Claire will find him.

There’s a few others that had scattered into the jungle. Probably Cindy and the kids. Probably won’t seem em again.

Quick thoughts: The water that runs through the source is also the water that runs into the healing spring in the temple. When the MIB told his mother how he would use the wheel to bend water and light to leave the island I believe this is exactly what Jacob did with his lighthouse. This is how he was able to see into his candidate’s lives.

What I think will happen: The light and island can only exist in one timeline. Everyone will die in the island universe. The island will sink in the universe it is in now so the light and island can exist in the flash sideways. The flash sideways is the epilogue of the story. It happened AFTER the island timeline ends. To stop the MIB they will sink the island. Jack as the new protector will touch the light and create his own rules. He will turn the wheel and move the island to the other universe. Everyone in the flash sideways will start to remember and “Let Go” be happy time! Thus the timeline we have always known will cease to exist. The flash sideways universe will be course corrected with the island and light now existing in it. Jack from the island universe must remain on the island even in the flash sideways universe. Because 2 of the same things can’t exist in the same universe. So sideways Jack will die. This is why we keep seeing the random cuts and the appendix scar. Everyone in the flash sideways will remember island Jack and what he did, “what he died for.”

Can’t take a lot of credit for the above. I read some cool theories that inspired that. I’m probably totally wrong! But alive or dead I’m saying the final image of LOST will be a close up of Jack’s eye closing. Just like the first image was a close up of his eye opening.

What I want, but won't happen: I am just looking forward to watching the wild ride. Can’t believe it’s ending. I’m in denial! Still hoping somehow someway that the Locke Jack surgery somehow triggers something crazy that has Locke come back to life on the island. I could hope can’t I? Remember Richard gave young Locke a test that he "failed" by choosing the knife. What if he really passed though and the knife has always been his destiny? What if the water in the spring at the temple is now fixed? The special dagger that can kill MIB is sitting in that temple right now, last used by Sayid to murder Dogen. I'm hoping Locke comes back and kills MIB with the dagger. The real Locke's body was lying in the shadow of the statue after all! Walt did have a dream about Locke being back on the island in a suit, the real Locke is buried in a suit!

On top of this I want a Mr.Eko appearance in the sideways. But I don't think it's happening either.

I will be attending the Times Talks event tomorrow with Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse. Might attempt to ask a question if it’s not a pain. Trying to think of the perfect one.

Namaste!
