More old recaps of season 6...

LOST: “The Substitute” & “The Lighthouse” & “Sundown”

Recap of “The Substitute”

Parallel Universe story: Best one so far in my opinion. In this universe Locke accepts his limitations of what he can’t do and ends up being a happier man for it. I don’t think it really matters how he got put in a wheel chair. Probably just some misfortunate accident. Maybe we’ll learn more about it. Helen mentions his father going to their wedding and he has a photo of him and his dad in his cubicle. It’s safe to say he wasn’t thrown out a window. Again, fate/destiny is bringing people together despite never meeting on the island… enter history teacher Ben Linus. I suspect Ben and John will end up being good friends in this universe.

Helen may have torn up Jack’s business card but I suspect fate will still bring John to Jack’s hospital somehow where Jack will fix him. I believe this storyline will be the climax of the parallel universe.

Original Island universe story: Illana/Frank/Sun/Ben: Interesting that Illana picks up some of Jacob’s ash and puts it in a bag. This will most certainly come into play. Has Jacob died before perhaps? I doubt it, but I’m sure his ash somehow is more powerful that the ash that keeps the man in black away from things. Illana is definitely intriguing. She was aware of the Temple, that Sun was married to Jin, etc. She definitely has information and it will be interesting to learn more about her and the connection to Jacob. Most intriguing thing to me about the episode was Illana mentioning the MIB being stuck as Locke now. How/why? Because they are going to bury Locke? Because Jacob is dead? I’m guessing because Jacob is dead. How does Illana know this information though? She’s clearly more informed then others. Ben’s lines about John at the burial were perfect. Wouldn’t expect anything else from the character. I still say despite being buried John comes back to life somehow.

Man In Black/Sawyer/Richard: The MIB has begun his recruitment process with Sawyer. Taking advantage of his vulnerable state. I think Sawyer will pull his biggest con yet on “the devil” though and ultimately do the right thing in the end. For the first time ever in the series Richard looked very frightened. He clearly has a past history with the MIB. Can’t wait for this to develop. I’m sure it all goes back to the Black Rock that day Jacob and the MIB were watching its arrival.

The vision of the kid – The MIB was generally frightened by this kid. There are rumors it’s Aaron or a 3rd party referee of sorts controlling the game between Jacob and MIB. I think it’s neither and just a manifestation of young Jacob. I think whatever rift happened between Jacob and the MIB goes back to their childhood and we will see it soon. Nothing else would freak the MIB out as much as seeing this. The blood on his arms was very symbolic of Cane & Abel. When the boy said, “You know the rules, you can’t kill him.” He was referring to Sawyer. Because Jacob deemed Sawyer a candidate the MIB can’t kill him. This is also why Sawyer was able to see this vision of Jacob – because he is a candidate. Notice Richard didn’t see the vision. I think the MIB can’t leave the island until all the candidates are dead. He can’t kill them himself. So he is recruiting a small army, aka the war Widmore told Locke about last year. He wants everyone to kill each other. Notice how the MIB screamed Locke’s famous “Don’t tell me what I can’t do!” Is the spirit of Locke fighting off the MIB? I doubt it, but interesting theory I read.

The Cave – Nice visual reference to “Jacob’s Ladder” to descend down to the cave. Notice the scale with the white and black stone. The scale is balanced and then the MIB takes the light/Jacob piece and throws it into the ocean. Indicating that the scale has tipped towards him. Now we see the names of everyone Jacob had been watching, and then visited and “pushed” toward the island. Seems like Jacob himself wanted to leave as well. We see the infamous numbers and now get a bigger revelation on why they were so powerful: They represent the last group of candidates Jacob will ever choose – some of the Oceanic 815 survivors. Don’t be fooled by the MIB. The island is very important and needs protection – from him. We’ll get more on his history with Jacob and the island soon enough. As for the numbers, I’m fully satisfied. We know what significance they have to the survivors. As far as Hurley playing them in the lotto: Fate/destiny. For Dharma the numbers were an equation that predicted the end of the world. We now have both a faith and a science explanation for them.

Here is a great link to see the entire list of candidates. Notice members of the key groups of people who Jacob has brought to the island were also potential candidates. Like members of Rousseau’s team, the U.S. army that brought the bomb, etc.

Recap of “The Lighthouse”

Parallel universe: Hello major change! Jack has a son. I read a great theory that the mother isn’t Sarah. But none other then Juliet. That when Juliet was dying in Sawyer’s arms in the season premiere and her brain seemed to be time jumping like Charlotte when she died that she was talking to Jack in the parallel universe in this moment. She said “Maybe we could get a cup of coffee sometime.” I agree this was her talking to Jack in the parallel and I suspect she is his ex and mother of his child. Seems Jack and Claire are brother and sister in this universe as well. Since Claire was in Christian’s will. Most intriguing part of this storyline was Jack noticing his scar from his appendix and not sure where it came from. Very similar to when he noticed the cut on his neck in the premiere. On the island, Juliet had taken Jack’s appendix out. According to his mother in the parallel ,the operation happened while he was 7 or 8. So why just notice the scar now? Big hint that the two universes are somehow linked. But how? This will not be fully addressed to the finale I’m sure.

Island storyline: Looks like Jacob might be pouring something into the healing spring to fix the water that I’m sure the MIB corrupted. Dogen seems to have a lot more information then both Richard and Ben. Soon as Hurley told him he was a candidate, Dogen left him alone. Ben and Richard both were unaware of what candidates were. The line Jacob wanted Hurley to tell Jack about him having what it takes goes back to Jack’s first flashback episode in season 1. This episode is almost like a mirror image of this episode. Christian told Jack he didn’t have what it takes to Jack when he was a young kid. Thus, the reaction Jack has to hearing this from Hurley. This was also the episode when Jack saw Christian on the island for the first time and discovered the empty coffin in the caves. It’s called “White Rabbit”.

I think Hurley’s suspicious line about traveling back to dinosaur times and dying in the caves was a subtle hint that the “Adam & Eve” skeletons are people we know. I’m still going with Rose & Bernard.

Jack and Hurley arrive at the Lighthouse. We see the names in the caves with the corresponding numbers. Seems like the Lighthouse is where Jacob watched over potential candidates. I don’t think the Lighthouse was visible to people. This is why they never discovered it before. You can only see it if Jacob wants you to see it. I think the Lighthouse mirrors don’t look out ward but rather inward almost into someone’s soul. We see the temple Jin & Sun got married at, the Church where Sawyer wrote his letter, and Jack’s childhood home. I believe Jacob really is sending someone to the island. But he didn’t need the lighthouse to get them there. He just told Hurley to turn it to 108 (if you add up the numbers you get 108, it also was the start of the countdown timer in the swan) and to bring Jack because he wanted Jack to see what was in the mirror. It was his way of showing Jack that he was important.

So who is coming to the island? Walt? Aaron? Widmore? Desmond? Etc. I suspect Desmond. Remember Eloise Hawking told him last year when he refused to go back the island wasn’t done with him yet. Maybe Desmond wasn’t actually on the Oceanic plane in the parallel? Maybe he will be the link between the two universes?

I do think Jacob is good but I certainly think he has some of his own motives as well. I understand he needed to protect Jack and Hurley since they are candidates and are important. But he just allowed all of the people he has brought to the island to potentially die. He tells Hurley someone (MIB) bad is coming to the temple and he needed to keep them safe. I guess things have to play out a certain way in his mind.

Claire – Think it’s safe to say now that Christian and MIB are the same. Since Claire said her friend and Christian both told her the others had her baby. I’m guessing Claire was in some sort of dying state when the merc’s blasted the dharma home she was in. She slowly died through the night and Christian came and took her to the cabin. Where she was claimed by the dark. So for the last 3 years in her Rousseau like lifestyle she has been brainwashed into thinking the others have Aaron. Jin is smart enough to play along and pretend they have Aaron. He just is trying to stay alive.

Recap: “Sundown”

Parallel Universe: Like Kate doing the right thing and helping Claire and claiming to have been framed, Locke accepting what he can’t do, and Jack trying to be a better dad then his. The Parallel universe version of Sayid comes to terms with who he is. Like his island version he constantly was searching for redemption for all the horrible things he has done. This is why he felt he could not be with Nadia in this universe. His past still catches up to him though. Despite Nadia’s plea that Sayid not seek revenge against those who harmed his brother he can’t help himself. I thought it was cool to have the loan sharks that Sayid’s brother owed be Keamy and Omar from the freighter that Widmore sent to the island. Why was Jin tied up by them? I suspect Jin was suppose to deliver Keamy the watch/cash on behalf of Sun’s father. But since he was in the customs line at the airport looks like he had a problem. I guess he went to explain himself to Keamy and got tied up for his troubles.

On Island story: I don’t think Dogen can make himself kill Sayid because he is simply not a killer. He had Sayid for the taking but watching the baseball fall off his desk was a reminder for why he was there: to save the life of his son. He can’t risk getting anyone killed so he sends Sayid out to kill the MIB. I think he was hoping the MIB would kill Sayid for him. That was not happening since MIB claimed Sayid. By the end of the episode Sayid was certainly claimed much like Claire. Notice Sayid allowed the MIB to speak before plunging the dagger into him. This on top of the fact that I think he was already claimed by the MIB are the reasons for him not being able to kill him.

I thought it was interesting that it wasn’t just the ash keeping MIB out of the temple. But also Dogen himself. I really hope this is elaborated on. I’m guessing Jacob did something to Dogen much like he did to stop Richard from aging.

Look’s like the war has gone to the next level. Let’s see where everyone is: MIB now has Sayid and Claire and Sawyer. I still say Sawyer pulls a con on the MIB. Will be interesting to see how Kate being with them for the time being has an affect on Sawyer. Jin is also with them for the moment. He also has about 12 -14 others including Cindy the stewardess from 815 and the two kids Zach and Emma from the tail section. The rest of the Others are now dead.

I think it’s safe to say Jack, Hurley and Ben will meet up with Illana, Frank, Sun, Miles and eventually Richard who was also on his way back to the temple. They will represent team Jacob.

Think it’s also safe to say we’ve seen the last of the temple. One thing the show better address is the fact that there is still a small group of Ajira plane survivors sitting on the smaller island. So who else is on the island? Rose & Bernard? I suspect are already dead somehow and their bodies will be discovered. Vincent’s probably roaming around. Every other “extra” died at the end of season 4 on the freighter or when dharmaville blew up or during the time shifts when the others attacked with arrows.

So a knife is the weapon that kills the MIB? Me thinks this is a visual foreshadow of John Locke coming back and taking out the MIB. Of all things it was a knife? Makes you wonder if when Richard gave young Locke the test and he picked the knife instead of the compass that he was actually right. Check out this quote from Jeff Jensen of EW, interesting stuff…

“Now, think back to the season premiere, ’'LA X.’' The castaways arrived back on the Island in the evening. Last night’s episode was the first time we’ve seen evening on the Island since then, and based on what we’ve seen, I think it’s safe to say that only one day has passed since Team Jughead was uploaded to Island 2007. Oh, and in case you weren’t keeping track, Lost’s last season is now one-third complete. Six hours of Lost 6.0 = 1 day on the Island. 18 hours on Lost 6.0 = 3 days. If we say that ’'LA X’' was Maundy Thursday, and if ’'Sundown’' was Good Friday, then will the show’s final hour be... Easter Sunday. And you know what happened on Easter? Resurrection. I’m telling you, folks, Alpha, the god of beginnings is coming back to balance the scales, but this time he’ll be wearing a whole new body, because he’s going to be a whole new creation: the resurrected John Locke.”
